Sandy Pfunder's Photo Album (1965-67) - 9
(Trabzon, Feb. 1966)
In about February of 1966, Peace Corps held a meeting in
Trabzon for volunteers in the Northeastern part of the country. For
recreation, Imre Kusu had the idea to rent a couple of open motor boats and
go out onto the Black Sea. These pictures were taken while Imre negotiated
the arrangements. Background is the main harbor of Trabzon.

More pictures of boating in Trabzon in February (I recall that it was about
as cold as it looks). Dennie Pearson and Paul Kinsley took turns at the
helm. We took two boats. My recollection is that it was not a long ride.

This picture was taken around the first of October 1965,
after we five Turkey 9 volunteers arrived in Trabzon but before we moved out
to our villages. It's taken under the portico of Aya Sofya church in
Trabzon. Tom Turner and Allen Neill Schauffler are in the back row, Ephraim
Frankel and Carol Franz in the front row. I think that's Ertugrul bey (the
Adult Education Director for Trabzon) on the far left, maybe with a
briefcase in hand. And then there are the man and woman in the front and
the man (in shadow) in the back, whom I can't identify. They must have been
part of our official welcoming committee.
