Most of these photos are from the area
around Bartın, the town in Zonguldak Vilayet,
where I taught English and French, 1967-69.

Kocagız. Many student went from this village to Bartın
to study. They "boarded" in Bartın
during the week and walked home on weekends. There were no proper boarding
facilities then and the students lived willy-nilly in hovels and old ahşap
houses. Some were so poor they might only be able to buy or barter for
sawdust to burn in their stoves.

Mezarlık türbesi about a mile outside Bartın. This was
my favorite spot, just southeast of Bartın,
where the foothills around the town begin. It was a beautiful spot for
photos then as was still interesting when I returned in 1980.

Venetian wall near Amasra

Amasra, where everyone from Bartın
and surrounding areas went for the summer. In my opinion, it was beautiful
and unpolluted. Amasra has been ruled by Greeks, Venetians, and
Ottomans.
